Cybersecurity Basics

The basics start with differentiating between threats, vulnerabilities and attacks. Hackers are THREATS who often exploit VULNERABILTIES in systems with ATTACKS for personal gain.

Threats are essentially people or things that can potentially cause issues to a computer system. Hackers are the most common types of threats but viruses and worms can also be that too.

Vulnerabilities are basically "weak links" in the system that makes it easier for an attack to occur. They can be fixed, but not all of them, but only some of them.

Attacks are actions conducted by a threat on a vulnerability to achieve a goal. They can be prevented, but sometimes they are often deadly to the whole Internet. Hacktivists are people who hack for a political goal.
